The harvest of grain in larger quantities in Latvia could start already in the second half of July

Grain harvesting in large quantities this year in Latvia could start in the second half of July, which is earlier than average in Latvia for other years, the farmers surveyed.

Edgar Ruza, general director of Latraps, said that even though the individual fields will be able to harvest grain earlier, serious harvesting will start in the second half of July - around 17, 18 and 20 July, which is earlier than in other years. "Usually around the 16th, 17th and 18th of July we receive only the first grains of cargo from the sun-burned land, but the real winter sowing of rape begins at the end of July. Last year, the rape started to grow a lot later, but this year harvest will begin at least ten days earlier , "said Ruza.

At the same time, he added that grain harvesting is also dependent on weather conditions. If there is rain, the grain harvest could start to be collected later, but if the heat returns, it will happen much earlier. He pointed out that due to unfavorable seed conditions and drought last year, the potential yield of cereals in Latvia would drop by at least 30% this year, compared to what it could have been.
